Hope Still Sings

If hope could be written in music, it wouldn't make a sound. A melody of silence, vibrato of anticipation. Believing, trusting--three steps forward, one step back. An invisible waltz, silent G chord, the worn toes of a ballet shoe.

When hope is tired, it looks like snow. Dropping icy feathers from the clouds, whistling through broken trees, and fallen bodies. When hope is tired, it looks like a golden sky. Far away streaks of fire, certain to disappear. But lingering, lingering, caressing daylight, holding soldiers, grasping onto the little strength it has left.

When hope is lost, it swirls in tar, marbled black and green. Stars hide behind their shadows, warmth is cloaked by fear, and failure shatters grace. When hope is lost, it blows an unseen wind, and carries a bitter burden. It cries at night alone, crushes the soul of its victim, invites the presence of evil, and colors the mountains black.

When hope is found, it's announced by horses, carried by birds, trumpeted by the jungle's roar. Hope is a battle cry. It sneaks in slowly, a thread hardly seen at first. Melody of silence, vibrato of anticipation. Believing, trusting--three steps forward, one step back. Charge, retreat. An invisible waltz, silent G chord, the worn toes of a ballet shoe.

When hope arrives, it climbs from dust, scrapes off blood, and traces butterflies. Enemies fall like dominoes, and arrows hit their mark. Guards and shields go up. Strength returns, dead arise and run free. Walls fall down, chains drop, and fear is cloaked by love. The crushed soul loosens and blossoms, and streams of truth defeat mountains.

One step forward, two steps back.
Hope is a battle cry.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into the grace in which we stand and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hears through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Romans 5:2-5
